i was trying to set up remote desktop on a home network in order to administer an XP box from a linux box. i have remote desktop enabled on the XP box, and can ping the linux box just fine. however, the linux box can not ping the XP box. both computers can access the internet via the router just fine.

also, firewalls have been disabled on the XP box.

any one have a solution to this problem?

do you get the same results when you ping by name and by IP address?

are you SURE windows xp firewall is turned off? it turns itself back on sometimes

Either way, its a firewall issue somewhere. If you can ping one way but not the other then something is stopping the echo request. A firewall.

yea, both by name and ip same result...i can ping the linux box fine from the xp machine.

the router shows each device as a connected device.

oh yea - firewall is off too 🙁 i don't know waht's wrong

There is no Norton, Windows F/W, Zone Alarm, or anything else?

This sounds like a firewall is blocking ICMP on the windows box.
