You can totally get botchulism from that.

If he was going to get botulism from a canned good it doesn't have to be expired.

OP, is the can bulging, rusted, or have any other outward sign of a problem? If it didn't have any of those warning signs, I'd use it as long as it didn't smell funky after opening. Then again, I'm not one of the many paranoid types around here.

still, the risk of botulism isn't worth saving a buck.
quite literally

When in doubt, always trust your nose. I'd eat it as long as it didn't smell funky.

Botulism from canned food is rare.

This article has a copyright date of 2008 and I'll call your attention to:
The FDA warned consumers to throw away 10-ounce cans of Castleberry?s, Austex and Kroger brands of hot dog chili sauce with ?best by? dates from April 30, 2009, through May 22, 2009.

If it's contaminated with botulism, expiration date does not matter.

ATOT is so neurotic when it comes to expiration dates.

It's fine.

It will be painfully obvious when a canned food item is bad.

Pop the 50 cents on a brand new can.

First pop into the time machine and go back to when it cost 50 cents.
😉

Okay, setting the dial for 5 minutes ago. You can find condensed soup for 50 cents a can and even 3 for a dollar. They're called sales.

If it smells ok eat it. I had a sandwich with mayo on it awhile ago that i noticed was a year old after i ate it, didn't get sick.
