Put a little purell or other hand sanitizer on the surface to start a blue flame.

Then turn comrpessed air so it sprays liquid upside down over the flame....

Man that was a big blue flame!

I didnt think this stuff was flammable?

Oh great, after doing that it released some chemical into the air... we were choking and it burned our noses and throats....

It is still hanging around. man.... did a quick search and it said hydrofluoric acid is released.

"Canned Air" is R-134a. It's exactly the same chemical that is used in modern automotive air conditioning systems.

Yes it's flamable. It's actually more flammable than butane/propane (both of which are better refrigerants than R-134a but were ironically rejected for vehicular use because of flamability).

Hand sanitizers can be used as fuel in an improvized camping stove made out of a soda can.

Symptoms of skin exposure to dilute HF are not felt immediately, but exposure of less than 10% of the body to it can be fatal, even with immediate medical treatment. Highly concentrated solutions may lead to acute hypocalcemia, followed by heart attack and death, and will usually be fatal in as little as 2% body exposure (about the size of the sole of the foot). This substance is extremely toxic and has the capacity to kill upon exposure rather than simply damage skin and eyes. It should be handled with extreme care, beyond that given to hydrochloric, sulphuric, or other mineral acids.

good luck!

Yup. Great that we're using this "safe" refrigerant in our cars instead of "dangerous" butane/propane based refrigerants which are less flammable, far less toxic, and far better for the environment. Gotta love how the EPA is doing such a great job protecting us all.

i was actually checking out the compressed air cans in our labs.. they use 1,1,1,2 tetrafluoroethane. was quite interested by that.. i thought they'd be something else (like compressed CO2, since it's so cold.. but that part is due to the liquid-->gas phase change)

Get to a hospital immediately. It sounds like you got a lot of the HF in your system. You're in mortal peril, do not hesitate to get the hell out of there and to an ER. If your story is true, you're in some deep sh!t..

Do you hear me? Get the hell out of your house and to the ER if you don't want to die.. I wouldn't be posting on the computer if there was a possibility that I'd die unless I got to an ER.

It is all true :( my friend almost choked out on the fumes at first.

Right now we both have mild chest pain (mine a little more), sore throat, burning eyes, and headaches.

If you don't stop posting on ATOT, you're going to be in the running for a Darwin Award, if what you say is indeed true.
