A clean install is NOT the answer for every computer problem.

Yes, do a virus scan and see if it turns pu anything, if not what OS are you using? Have you tried a system restore back a few days? Also, what was done before this stopped working

hi
thanks for the information ...........i am using Windows XP professional ..............
i have scanned my pc with symantec antivirus and it found nothing exotic ...........
i have not tried any system restore back up in fear of losing some important data................

Well, back up your important data and then try a System Restore to a time previous to when the problem developed.

Based upon Google's hard drive failure analysis, with seven hard drives, you are likely to have one hard drive failure about every two years. I suggest backups....

Are you logging in as admin?

Also, have you changed any permissions on drives/folders over the last few days?
When you say you can open them by right-clicking - is that Right Click - Explore, or open, or props?

no i am not loged in as Admin............
i have not "changed any permissions on drives/folders over the last few days"
right click>explore....

Can you try a 3rd party explorer shell?
Like totalcommander or universal explorer to see if it happens in them also.

from a run prompt

SFC /scannow to compare the files on your drive with the ones from your XP cd and repair it if necessary. Short of that, do a system restore back to before it happened. Im not entirely short but that sounds like the kind of thing that could only be messed up with a registry entry.
