Can not install XP UPDATE

I have a question
I have a new system as follows

Soyo Dragon 333 Ultra Platinum
XP1800 no overclock
3 Sticks OCZ PC2700
Seagate 60 gig ata 100
PNY 4600 Verto

I can install Win98 but when I try to install WinXP I get an ATAPI error with a message IRQL_NOT_LESS
etc I do not remember the whole error.

How do I install?
Thanks

I had a ATA100 cable on the CD-Rom which for whatever reason caused me no end of problesm. I replaced this cable with a regular IDE cable and it now works fine. WTF go figure man. This is wierd. THanks for the input.

check to see if there are switches in the XP install that will disable some system checking. you might have to do trial & error to find which checks to disable. sounds like XP is choking on some piece of hardware you have--maybe CD-ROM.

I recently had a problem with installing XP, so I just put linux on the box, but wife
complained about it. After a few hints here, I took out my GF4 card, put in an old
GF2 card and XP installed without a hitch. Why XP wouldn't install with a GF4, I dunno,
but that what was killing my install. (I put the GF4 card in afterwards 🙂)

Do you have the boot sector virus protection disabled in your bios? This has created the most issues for me when installing a new Microsoft Operating System when I look back on all my installations. Just disable it during the installation, then turn it back on when you're done.

It is weird. 98 runs perfect but when I put XP on it.. all kinds of crazy things happen. It goes to amber light on the monitor then dies. It beeps on boot up.. I have replaced the ram and video card.
Errrr stupid XP.

XP home or Pro or corporate? Real or hacked?

what is all the hardware and what steps are you going through to install?

I used to get that error post-install until I set memory performance to Programs and not System Cache.

good luck.

It is Pro version not hacked.

I have a Enermax case
I have the Soyo KT333 Dragon Ultra Platinum
I have 3 sticks of OCZ PC2700 256 meggers
I have a PNY Verto 4600
I have a Ricoh DVD-Rw
I have a Mistumi Floppy
I have a Seagate 60 gig ata 100 Atlas IV
I have a Keyboard and mouse

I first used the bootable cd to install and I got the error IRQL_NOT_LESS etc. It said the system has been shut down to prevent damage. So I install win98 which works perfect no problems at all. I then try to upgrade to XP and it crashes out with the same IRQL_NOT_LESS error at a blue screen. Now the computer will not boot. It does all kinds of random things like no post or messed up video or hangs. I think it may be a non AMD power supply that is my problem.
If that is the case though why would 98 work fine? Errr I am confused.

should check the memory too. have had stcks that work fine with 98 install but not XP.(but then worked fine AFTER XP was installed , wierd)
good luck
