Can Not install NVDIA driver in Ubuntu

Ok I used the package manager to load the nividia driver as well as a configuration tool (that I can not seem to find)

I really just want to get my Dual display working.

OK what is gcc and how do I install it?

I am gfetting my ass kicked here.

I am trying to get the dual display working on this system and It is not going as well As I would like.

Everything boils down to getting this driver installed and then I have a shot.

It's the Gnu Compiler Collection. I can't believe you didn't get the chance to install it when you installed Ubuntu.

Use Ubuntu's package management system to install it. Shouldn't be tough.

I have the the gcc 3.0 base installed

But does that load when I load to failsafe mode to load the driver?

I got an error that I needed to be root but it will not allow me to log in as root.

Make sure the user account you are using has root privledges, then once you get to the desktop, hit Control + Shift + Backspace 5 times to get to the command line.

It really is quite simple. I assume you have loaded the Synpatic Package Manager before (in System Prefs or something menu). Now you may have to edit the Repositories list and enable the universe/multiverse, but basically you have a huge list of software. Find the Nvidia driver, click install, then apply and it will do all the work for you. Any time you want software, check Synaptic first. It will resolve all the dependency issues and there is a sh*t ton of stuff to choose from.

Actually I think it's Kynaptic in Ubuntu 5.04 by default (I prefer Synaptic). Edit > Find to search for a package. It should round up all dependencies like gcc and install it for you.

Herein a complete answer
Download the latest x64 Nvidia Driver off their website (currently 352.41)
Remove all traces of Nvidia or better yet redo your system otherwise start anew.
restart your computer and keep press both shift keys.
This will bring the grub menu, load the latest kernel in RECOVERY MODE.
Enter root password if needbe.
mount -o remount,rw /
IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1
export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH
cd /home/username/Downloads
ls
You will see: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-352.41.run (in black)
chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-352.41.run
You will see: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-352.41.run (in green)
sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-352.41.run

Say Yes to everything, if you get cc error, then do the following on a normal startup before the former.
type which gcc
Nothing should return in your case.
sudo updatedb
locate gcc
Now this should return something, and even if it doesn't try the following.
sudo apt-get install build-essential (about 90MB)
now type which gcc
Tada.
Now install the driver.
