can not get XP machine on network

I just finished formatting my bros computer from Windows 2000, over to Windows XP Pro. The reason for formatting what becuase I could not get this machine to browse the my home network. I have my cable modem hooked up to a Linksys router that is fed into an Intel inBusiness hub. It can access the internet just fine, but for some reason could not browse the network. After loading windows XP on the machine, I still can not get it to browse the network. The machine is a Dell 4100 P3 1GHz box. Would it be possible the NIC (3com 10/100 3c905c-TX) could be at fault?

Anybody experience anything like this be4?

I'm experiencing the same exact sh|t... I also have that same 3com adapter - however, I highly doubt the adapter is at fault.

You are sure it is in the same workgroup, user name is set up in other computers, etc right?
If so, then turn off the firewall in XP, that should allow you onto the network. What a PITA that was for me. My boss and his son got new laptops and took me 2 hrs to figure out why I could acces the net thru our Lan, but couldnt browse our network. Turned of firewall and there it was.

I dont know much about XP. But if you want to check the n/w.

1. First make sure your comps are on the same WORKGROUP.
2. On DOS prompt, try using PING commands to check the communication. PING 90.0.0.1 (IP of the neighbouring machine)
3. try putting all the machines under same subnet. say..... 255.255.255.0

Thanks for the information, I'm getting ready to hook up a new dell w/ win XP to the network later this afternoon, I'll check the firewall first!! 🙂
