I have service pack 2 and it was suppose to fix the problem ..
My Toshiba CD ROM is the slave and my plextor is set as a Master and both are selected to run under DAM mode if availabe ... but plextor keeps coming back to PIO

I had to disable UDMA in the BIOS to get Win2K to install. I assume you have it enabled in the BIOS?

I'm having the same trouble. I cannot get my Plextor to go to DMA in the BIOS. Every time I try it switches back to Auto and disables DMA mode. I enable DMA in IDE properties and it sets itself to PIO.
A check using Adpatecs ASPI check shows that I have no ASPI installed and when I try to install ASPI it says I have no adaptec devices installed.
I saw this Force ASPI download program at doom9.org but it has no install directions so I'm not sure if I need it or not.

Running Win2k, clean install, SP2
I read in another thread that SP2 was supposed to correct the DMA problem with plextor but apparently that is not the case.
In the mean time everything is working right now so should I just leave well enough alone?

force aspi is nice. definetly essential and a back way to get a good aspi layer on your computer.

My Sony burner runs on PIO still. I'm not sure why.

Force ASPI would be nice if someone would give instructions on how and where to install it.

BTW: New VIA 4.32 is supposed to allow CD ROM in Win2k to use DMA......well it still doesn't enable it for my plextor. My CD Rom was already using DMA with the 4in1 4.31. Back to the drawing board.

Did you short the jumper on the back of the drive? Undocumented by Plextor, but it worked for me.

You HAVE to put a jumper on the pins marked "Reserved" or there simple will be no DMA. W2K SP2 just fixed the ATA100 support for hard drives - the Plextor is not ATA100. You need an aspi driver to use Nero, CDRWin and a few others. ForceASPI allows you to install Adaptec's ASPI flavor but it can be hard to find sometimes as Adaptec shuts down the sites that publish it. You can get an ASPI that will work from here.
