I'm helping someone who has Bellsouth Fast Access DSL Internet using a Alcatel Speed Touch Home and a Linksys BEFSR11 Cable/DSL NAT/router box.

The Internet access worked OK for many, many months until about a week ago. I took the Linksys router box with me and it worked fine with my cable modem. I know it's not the same situation since Bellsouth DSL uses PPPoE and my cable modem system doesn't, but at least I know it seems to be working OK. I loaded in the newest firmware for the Linksys box and completely reset all of the configuration settings.

When I connected it to the DSL modem again, it still wouldn't work. It would try to authenticate for a while and then get a "Can not connect to PPPoE server" error message in the Linksys router's browser-based control panel. I talked to Bellsouth to make sure I had the correct user name and password. They suggested I try the DSL modem without the Linksys router using the PPPoE software. I couldn't do that because I couldn't find that software anywhere.

I'm still trying to figure out whether the problem is in the Linksys router, Alcatel DSL modem, or phone system. Any suggestions? I did notice that the Line TX LED on the Alcatel DSL modem blinks on and off all the time. Is that normal?

Thanks for any info you can give me.

I don't think the blinking thing is normal. I have Verizon Online DSL, which also uses PPPoE and have a lot of sharing problems. I've been trying to network 2 PC's to share the same internet connection using both ICS initially, then WinGate. Both gave me problems, I'm guessing from the internet connection, more than the hardware.

But back to the modem, I had a different modem from Verizon but whenever I saw some blinking - it usually meant that I just lost my connection and it's trying to re-establish it.

I definitely don't think it's the router, probably not the modem either. What OS are you running? Also, if you need a PPPoE dialer/adapter - try RASPPPOE.

do not use uplink....

1) modem > router (wan)

2) then one of the lan ports on router > computer...

don't know what kind of cable you will need for the #1 connection, but you will need for the "Link" light in the "WAN" column of the router....(this is the furthest righ hand column)...to be lit solid...

then from your computer...go to dos prompt and type "ping 192.168.1.1" and hit enter...
if you get 4 replies, then your computer is speaking to router...(minimize dos window)

then open IE...immediately click stop on the browser....then go to tools> internet options> connections (make sure it's set to never dial a connection) > LAN settings (uncheck all boxes).....click okay...then apply/okay...this will bring you back to the main browser window...

in the address bar...type "http://192.168.1.1"

when asked for username/password....leave username blank...enter "admin" (case sensitive) as the password...and click okay....

you will be on the router "setup" page...where you will make sure that your router is set to obtain IP automatically under the "WAN IP" section....Then under the "Login" section you will select "PPPoE" option.

below the PPPoE section you will enter your bellsouth p/w and it will look something like this username@bellsouth.net
then type in the corresponding password for the earthlink account...

below that select the "keep alive option"....then click the "apply" button, then the "continue" button...which will bring you back to the "setup" page again...

from there...click on the "status" tab at the top of that page....then you will be on the status page....

there on the "status" page...you will see a section called "Login" and next to it ...you should see "PPPoE status connected"

if not-----> leave the screen where it's at...unplug the power supply from the modem and router...let it sit w/o power for one (1) minute...then power up your MODEM FIRST....when the lights have stablized....power up your router.....

then go back to the computer and press the "F5" key 3-4 times ...the status should then turn to say "PPPoE status connected"...

voila....up and running...restart your other computers and you are good to go....
