Can not connect to internet with new Linksys WRT54GL

I just bought a brand new Linksys WRT54GL <per recommendation from this board> from newegg.

Tried to install last night and could not connect to the net <wire, still haven't mess with the wireless yet> via the new router. I am ok with connection via the old Dlink DI 524 or straight from the DSL modem so the net connection is ok, just not with the new router.

I used the installation CD and follow all the step but it kept saying the router can't connect to the net. I tried with DHCP and PPOS but not go.

Any suggestions? TIA.

Go into the settings of your old router and look for what MAC address it is using. Then change the MAC address of the new router to match the old one.

Alternatively, you may need to call your ISP and tell them you have a new router and they may need to provision the new MAC address for it.

I haven't had any experience with DSL modems but when I was using comcast, you could force the modem to clear what MAC address it was using by unplugging it for several minutes then starting it back up. You may want to try the same thing.

I am going to assume your doing PPOE on the modem?

Do you have AT&T? If thats the case the MAC has nothing to do with it, you have to login.

Most likely your new router has the same IP as your DSL modem. Since you are doing PPOE on the router the modem is trying to assign a 192.168.X.X IP address to your WAN port.
My modem assigns 192.168.1.1 which is the default IP address of those routers.
Try changing the router IP to 192.168.1.2 and see if it works.

no, It would work if the modem was doing the PPPoE, it would just be stange and some stuff wouldn't work.
He needs to configure the PPPoE on the router with his DSL username and password.
And most of the att DSL modems are 192.168.1.254 and assigning 192.168.1.1 to the WAN port would make no difference.
and if he does have the correct PPPoE username and pass it won't assign the router a 192 it will assign the routers wan port his public ip.
if its not correct the wan port will not get any ip.

I assumed that since he mentioned he could hook his PC direct to the modem and have it work he was doing PPOE on the modem.

It all depends what kind of modem he has. On my old school modem if i have PPOE set to the modem it gives itself an IP of .1.1 and that screws with my router. If i have it set to bridged it passes the WAN ip onto the WAN port of the router.
