can not complete phase 2 of check disk when in Windows XP

Can someone shed some light on why I can not get computer that is running Windows XP pro 2002 service pk 3 to successfully complete phase 2 of the check disk function while the XP operating system is up and running at the desktop ?

If I check the 2 boxes and restart/boot the check disks runs and completes fine BUT just as soon as I get back to the O/S desktop and try to run the check disk function from there again it will not successfully complete phase 2 of the operation.

Is this possibly being caused by either a service or a program/process that is running while the check disk is trying to run that is interfering with the completion of phase 2 ?

I have the firewall disabled and antivurus program turned off when I am trying to do the check disk at the desktop.

The problem was that the INDEXING service had been turned on and apparently this was causing the check disk program to not have the proper access to the drive to complete the scan.

Turned the service off and scan went off without a hitch.
