Can non-ECC ram and ECC capable be mixed.

Can non-ECC ram and ECC capable ram be mixed?? A buddy bought more
ram for his gateway PC. It had 128MB of PC133 ram. He added a 256MB stick of ram and his machine had a crap fit. The PC ran fine with the 256MB ram alone but not with the 128MB stick of ram. The only difference in the ram other than the ECC issue is it is a different MB size. What do you think?

thanks

The machines I have worked with do allow mixing of ECC and Non ECC dimms but only with ECC turned off. ECC would only work if all the dimms were 'by 72' or ECC capable. You post wasnt clear if the new dimm added was ECC or not. I would expect the machine to be mad if you added a non ecc dimm to an already set up ecc config. You would have to go into setup and turn off ecc.
