So here is the story. Everything was streaming fine from my Vista 64 machine using WMP for about a year and then all of the sudden my 360 was no longer able to find my computer through the wireless connection. This happened directly after I performed a hard reset on my router and reconfigured it to be exactly the same as it was before which suggests that the router is the problem...or at least that is what I thought initially. Here is where it gets weird.
A few facts:
1. The 360 is still able to connect to XBL.
2. WMP is able to see the 360 with no problem.
3. I tried installing a replacement for WMP called Orb and that worked, but I was very unhappy with the quality so I removed it.
4. My router's config involves only allowing MAC addresses that I specify. The firewall in both Windows and my router is turned off. The ports that are recommended to be open are open.
5. I know TVersity and other software exists, but I don't want to use it. I want to use WMP.
Now, the combination of the first 3 above is what confused me and it made me wonder if the true problem is not the router and/or its configuration. I am now suspecting that WMP is the problem, but I am not certain.
What I have tried to do so far to troubleshoot:
1. I turned off sharing and completely removed the 360 from WMP. After that, I restarted my computer and went through the steps from A-Z so that WMP would find the 360 again and enable sharing. WMP found the 360, but the 360 still did not see any computers.
2. I performed another hard reset on my router and reconfigured it again. No dice. I also turned off every bit of security in both Windows and my router which included disabling the MAC address security. The 360 still could not find my computer.
3. I tried connecting the 360 directly to both my computer and my router using an ethernet cable. No dice. I will not accept that configuration anyways, but I wanted to see if it would work.
4. I have run through the basic steps on the 360 where it tries to find my computer and I have give it plenty of time (hours) to just sit there and find it. It never found it.
5. I tried some trick I found on the net which involved removing some windows registry entries that prompted Vista to perform an install of WMP. After the installation occurred I noticed that the settings were retained so I know it was not a 100% repair. Didn't help at all.
Lastly, I haven't done anything further to troubleshoot for a couple weeks so there may be a few details that I am forgetting. Please ask me as many questions as you need. I am getting desperate at this point. The only thing left that I can think of doing is formatting my machine and praying that it works, but I would rather not go that route if possible.
