So here is the story. Everything was streaming fine from my Vista 64 machine using WMP for about a year and then all of the sudden my 360 was no longer able to find my computer through the wireless connection. This happened directly after I performed a hard reset on my router and reconfigured it to be exactly the same as it was before which suggests that the router is the problem...or at least that is what I thought initially. Here is where it gets weird.

A few facts:

1. The 360 is still able to connect to XBL.
2. WMP is able to see the 360 with no problem.
3. I tried installing a replacement for WMP called Orb and that worked, but I was very unhappy with the quality so I removed it.
4. My router's config involves only allowing MAC addresses that I specify. The firewall in both Windows and my router is turned off. The ports that are recommended to be open are open.
5. I know TVersity and other software exists, but I don't want to use it. I want to use WMP.

Now, the combination of the first 3 above is what confused me and it made me wonder if the true problem is not the router and/or its configuration. I am now suspecting that WMP is the problem, but I am not certain.

What I have tried to do so far to troubleshoot:

1. I turned off sharing and completely removed the 360 from WMP. After that, I restarted my computer and went through the steps from A-Z so that WMP would find the 360 again and enable sharing. WMP found the 360, but the 360 still did not see any computers.

2. I performed another hard reset on my router and reconfigured it again. No dice. I also turned off every bit of security in both Windows and my router which included disabling the MAC address security. The 360 still could not find my computer.

3. I tried connecting the 360 directly to both my computer and my router using an ethernet cable. No dice. I will not accept that configuration anyways, but I wanted to see if it would work.

4. I have run through the basic steps on the 360 where it tries to find my computer and I have give it plenty of time (hours) to just sit there and find it. It never found it.

5. I tried some trick I found on the net which involved removing some windows registry entries that prompted Vista to perform an install of WMP. After the installation occurred I noticed that the settings were retained so I know it was not a 100% repair. Didn't help at all.

Lastly, I haven't done anything further to troubleshoot for a couple weeks so there may be a few details that I am forgetting. Please ask me as many questions as you need. I am getting desperate at this point. The only thing left that I can think of doing is formatting my machine and praying that it works, but I would rather not go that route if possible.

One thing that killed me a few times in getting the 360 to see my pc was I had to go into services and make sure to turn on the WMP sharing. So right click on my computer and click manage. From there services and applications -> services -> Windows media player network sharing service, make sure this service is running and actually go into it and set it as automatic so it runs every time you boot up. This fixed my sharing issue a few times. I would give this a try and see if it helps.

Try this:

Turn off Xbox.
Turn off PC.
Turn off Router.

Turn back on router and wait for it to fully boot.
Turn back on PC and wait for it to fully boot.
Turn on Xbox and try sharing again.

I had this happen with my PS3 and there was some UnP handshaking between the three devices that got out of whack. Booting up in this order would fix it.

When I had this issue it was because Vista changed one of my network connections from private to public. Once I changed it back to private, which I have to do from time to time, it fired right back up...

Hope that helps.

I think I tried that or at least I tried it with some of the other services recommended in various solutions over the web. I will double check though.

Will give it a shot and cross my fingers.

I forgot to mention that I checked that. My network is set to private. I tried switching to Public just in case though at one point. I made sure to switch it back after that failed.

Thanks to all of you so far. Keep it coming. I will try these and any others that are suggested tonight and report back the results.

Had to do that a couple times myself (with the PS3). I skipped the router step, though.

Do you have a software firewall on your pc, other than the one that comes with Vista?
What anti-virus software are you using?

No additional firewall and I am using the free version of AVG 8.0.

I had a problem with the media sharing with my Vista32 laptop recently. My computer found the PS3 but the PS3 couldn't find WMP11 Media Sharing. Randomly i kept getting a media sharing error, after hours of googling i found out that i had to delete everything in my DRM folder (ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM) and update the drm http://drmlicense.one.microsof...en/indivit.asp?force=1

I had the same problem, although with an XP machine and Media Player 11. For some reason, one of the services it needed just wouldn't start. I never got it working right. I ended up doing a new XP installation and then it was working again. I tried everything I could find on Google (although I never found the DRM thing above so I didn't try that)

how can you remove PCs from the 360s list of computers? i've got like 2-3 computers listed on my 360, all with the same name. the only one that ever works is the one that the Zune symbol shows up beside. and that only happens when i don't want to stream anything.

sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. guess i can try reformatting my PC.

Is your 360 listed in your network? Go to start, then network. If it's there, right click on it, and get it's ip address. If it isn't, then check your router, and see what ip it gave the 360.

We want to make sure you can ping the 360. Hit the windows button, along with R. When the run box opens, type cmd to open a command window. Once that's open, type ping and the ip address of the 360. It should look like: ping 123.456.789.123 If you get replies back, then I'd say it's not your router.

I'll stop here for now.

I think you might be on to something. The 360 is in my network. It shows up in both Vista's list of devices on my network as well as my DHCP Client list in my router. I also checked the 360's network information regarding IP addresses and such through the 360, but I did not check to see if the info matched in Vista or the router. I think I also pinged the IP address that is saw in the 360 from my computer and I did not get any replies back. I will double check tonight though. I might be wrong about what I did with the pinging.
