The thing is, that GTA IV runs crap on Vista with just 2GB RAM. Also, I get frequent FPS drops in AOE3 and UT3.

At 12x10 MAX 4x AA Win XP gives 62 FPS capped while in Vista I get frequent drops forcing me to play without any AA at all. Is that because I have only 2GB RAM or is it that Vista is that much slower than XP for my rig.
People with experience with 2GB VS 4GB RAM in Vista please comment. I did not find Windows 7 much better than Vista in terms of smoothness and FPS drops, although in some games Windows 7 is a bit better. But not in AOE3 or UT3.

Please help me.

I am getting 4GB RAM soon. Which OS should I use for max performance esp in games primarily UT3 and GTA IV?
Win XP 32/64
Win Vista 32/64
Win 7 32/64

I had Vista with 2GB and vista used about 30% of 2GB now I have 4 GB and it uses 30% of 4 GB. So it adjusts the RAM it uses based on how much you have. I dont think I really noticed a difference. Maybe kinda. Some programs started/ended earlier.

BTW GTA4 runs like crap on any PC.

If you are getting 4 GB then get Vista 64-bit. 64-bit is the only way you will be able to use 4 GB of ram.

If you haven't disabled DX10 for UT3 I think that's your problem in Vista for that. I can't comment about AoE3, and GTA4 runs like crap for pretty much everyone.

I think you have some other issue if AoE3 is not running well on your system. The desktop in my sig plays AoE3 at 16*10, all settings maxed with no framerate issues whatsoever. I don't have a FPS count for you, but I have never noticed video lag of any kind.

BTW, this is on Vista 64 and Win 7 64 Beta

Ha, I was running Vista on my laptop which is a Core Duo (read pentium dual core) with 1.5GB of Ram and I could play some games on it. It only has a Radeon Xpress 200m video card too.

Move to Windows 7 and i bet your problems go away.

XPx64 good OS but getting old and not as supported as the newer Operating Systems,so that leaves Vista x64 or Win7 beta for gaming(if you going 4GB or higher),Win7 retail has no release date yet and to be honest I bet you'll see SP2 for Vista well before Win7 goes retail infact a little birdy tells me April/May for SP2 for Vista.

I would never recommend any beta OS for a dedicated system(no matter how good ) so that really leaves Vista x64 for now.

Side note more ram is always better for gaming on any OS.

If you're worried about Vista's performance you can turn off Aero and all the fancy stuff it has but when you go into a game full screen it turns all that off anyways. I have never noticed a difference in gaming from XP or Vista 64.

a lot of people seem to think that... but i dont know why?

Aero is still running when games are played fullscreen...

if you want to disable aero, you can right click a shortcut and tell it to disable when you run. But other than that it doesnt disable.
