Can my motherboard support CPU that's higher than its speed limiation?

Currently i have a compaq computer k7-500, and i don't know what mb it is , and i want to upgrade my cpu to higher one does anyone know how to find out how fast ur mb can support ? And i did try to find out wut mb it is from compaq, but too bad they don't know jack about it, and instructed me to talk to my vendor .... can someone give me some input on that : ) thanks !
