Can my ISP see that I'm using more than one IP

I am getting ready to move into an apartment complex that has 'ethernet' services setup thru a company that works with my college. They use DHCP. I have two PCs. Of course they say you have to pay double if you use 2 PCs, but if I do just throw a switch in there will they be able to see that I am taking two IP addresses?

yeah i knew w/ the router...

would it be easy for them to tell would be the question, would they have to look for it.. i should just try it, if i get in trouble ill just play stupid and buy a router

Anything acting as a dhcp server will know because your lease ip address is bind in their database. Im sure if they are charging per pc they have some kind of address scheme. Good luck!

You may want to try hooking up 2 pc's to see if it even works. The ethernet properties I manage are setup to only allow one mac address behind each port...basically one computer per port. Chances are, if you can hookup 2 computers, and manage to get them on the network, chances are they don't monitor the network very closely.

Does the service come with your apt, or is it extra? If it comes with the apartment, I'm willing to bet you can get away with it.

If you use one of the nice little broadband routers available now, they shouldn't be any the wiser if you're running NAT and hiding your internal topology.

Since, with a broadband router, you ONLY use one external (registered) address, you aren't violating anything with them at all.

I'd get a broadband router, if not just to protect myself from other users in the building. In case..

And you have a small network switch usually, too.

but what u all dont understand is that he may not want to use nat.. i have encounted many times that i can not direct connect with people becuase they and i are natted...

Tough nookie, it's called security! Open some ports or something. I rpefer to just live with it.
