can my cpu fit in another socket??

Can a Am3 Cpu such as the Athlon X2 255 fit in a AM2 or Am2+ etc socket? Or can it only fit in a Am3 socket????

Depends on the mainboard. AM3 should be backwards compatible. But again, DO CHECK THE MAINBOARD CPU SUPPORT LIST...

What do you want to gain by changing motherboards ? Do a mobo cpu upgrade, grab a AMD X4 or FX-8350

Your not gaining nothing by changing boards except in the future you can drop a FX-8350 The FX-8150

However, there is a catch. AM3 CPUs fitted onto AM2 motherboards will only support DDR2 and won't be able to take advantage of HT-3

It will work in an AM2+ socket. It will probably not work in an ordinary AM2 socket, and is not supported.
