Can my 20pin PSU perfectly handle a 24pin board?

I am upgrading to a Epox EP-9NPA+ Ultra board + 7800GT, and i am wondering if my current PSU is good enough. I have a Thermaltake Silent Purepower 480watt in an Antec P180 case. This psu is a 20 pin connector, and the board is a pci-e 24 pin. I read on a massive guide over in these AT forums that certain PSUs can do 20 -->24 pins, but only the good ones. Apparently, you can plug a 20 pin into a 24 pin just some of the rails will have to work hard. I already know i need to get a 1 pci - 2 molex power conversion cable for my pci 7800gt. Since this is a high performance rig, i of course feature stability and performance (and noise) above all else.

I read two PSU guides and they both said my current peak wattage was around 280.

I also heard on another forum that nvidia rec. 25a on a 12v rail for the 7xxx series. any truth to this?

Do i need to change to a native 24pin PSU or are adapter cables satisfactory?

My specs:

AMD 3500+, 130nm, stock HSF
BFG 7800GT
Motherboard (see Below)
2x512 Mushkin ddr400
Maxtor 7200rpm 120GB HDD
1 dvd/rw drive
Audigy 2 zs
Floppy
Antec P180, two 120mm fans, one 80mm

I use a 465W Enermax 20pin PSU on a 24 pin MSI Neo4 Diamond SLI, with a 7800GT and a 3200+ @ 2600MHz without problem, so you will be fine.
You don't even need an adapter. I have my 20pin plug plugged into 20 of the 24 pins on the mobo, and then an adapter to make 2 molex -> one 6 pin SLI connector for the graphics card.
Dual rail 16A/15A IIRC on the 12V rail.

MSI Neo4 SLI
3200+ @ 2600MHz
2xOCZ PC3200
4xHDD
1xDVDRW
5x80mm fan, 1x92mm fan

You should be absolutely fine.

ok, here is what i noticed on the 7800gt websites.

For PNY, the brand that i am getting at compusa, says it need " A minimum 350W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 20A)". Mine is only 12V current rating of 18A.

Lonyo, what are the 12V ratings on your psu? What 7800 do you have?
