can mp3 files contain virus?

How is this possible if it's not an executable file? I'm asking because nod32 detected a trojan in an mp3 downloaded from a halflife server

It looks like this is possible Kaspersky some info and Probably more with a little looking you could try uploading at virustotal and see what shows up. It is also possible to spoof a file name in some cases and make an executable look like another file type.

would renaming an .exe file to say .mp3 etc open up the possibility for viruses to get through..

Its possible because certain media players had bugs and a properly malformed media file could exploit the bug.
