can mobile amd xp cpu be put into desktop motherboards?

Are their any mobile Athlons based off of the Tbred B? Other than that I doubt any of them could make for incredible overclocking wonders like the mobile P4s...

I have a Compaq 900z (thanx Hot deals forum 🙂 ) with a XP2000+ T-bred mobile and I've been planning to pull it and check it to verify if it's a A or B and if they used some cheesy thermal compound/pad on it or what , and since I'm pricing out a AMD box for myself I'll co-ordinate the 2 events and post results@ that time.....

Well, MY interest is tweaked... 1700+ T-bred B mobile may be my next purchase... Give it a month or two so they're out there to find 😉

*Theoretically* a mobile chip should be more able to o/c that an "ordinary" desktop cpu.
Usually the better chips are sorted out for MPs and mobiles.

i think they are the same chip....just "better" becase they can work at a much lower voltage at the same speed....

and mp's are just xp's which are "tested" for mp applications...you can also mod an xp into an mp...however some came with the bridge connected so no mod was necessary

but ya, imo it should work

i rather wait 6 more month and get a 2100+ for the same price. As for now, 1300mhz is more then good enough for me.

But there's real technology behind today's 12 new 0.13-micron-process CPUs. Five are low-voltage mobile Athlon XP-M processors -- performance ratings 1400+, 1500+, 1600+, 1700+, and 1800+ -- with small-form-factor microPGA packaging for slimline notebook designs. They're based on AMD's "Thoroughbred" (128K Level 1 and 256K of Level 2 cache) core.

The other new mobile Athlon XP-M processors use AMD's faithful Socket A packaging. They include 2000+, 2200+, 2400+, and 2600+ chips intended for full-sized, desktop-replacement portables; and 2200+, 2400+, and 2500+ CPUs aimed at mid-sized, mainstream notebooks. All, like the low-voltage XP-Ms, use a 266MHz front-side bus.

The last two (mainstream 2400+ and 2500+) skip the "Thoroughbred" for the newer "Barton" core, with 128K of Level 1 and 512K of Level 2 on-chip cache -- which AMD promises will be available for all mobile market segments by mid-2003. For today, the company says, the Athlon XP-M 2500+ outperforms Intel's 2.4GHz mobile Pentium 4 by up to 10 percent on assorted benchmarks.

im really looking forward to the review of the new athlon xp-m based laptops..... always supported amd chips

I have a 1600xp mobile chip in my sn41g2 shuttle. They work in most boards but some cannot recognise the highest multiplier that the powernow supports and will instead run a 5x multiplier. I have modded mine so that it runs at 10 x 166 @1.65vcore and the temps stay around 38c which is pretty cool considering the shuttle heatsink system isnt the best for cooling.
