Can Mac Books and MBP connect to regular Linksys, Belkin, etc, 802.11g wireless routers?

I'm having the damnest time trying to help my mom connect to her router which is a WRT54G. She's been told she needs the Airport router or whatever it's called. Is this true? That is certainly limiting I have to admit.

Yes, they can. Make sure your router firmware is up-to-date, or, better yet, upgrade to DD-WRT.

I have had issues connecting Macs to Linksys routers. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. No issues with DLink or Netgear though. As MrChad said, make sure that the firmware is up to date, and that you have all the settings correct on both ends (the router isn't blocking MAC addresses, and that the Mac can see the router). And you should be ok.

I've used a WRT54GS for as long as I can remember. Never had a problem with it.

As others have said, any standard wireless router should work. I have used both Linksys and dlink with OS X (10.4.x and 10.5.x) without problems.

I was using WPA2, but I lowered it to WPA so my xbox 360 could connect (the wireless does for the 360 does not support wpa2)

My WRT54G works fine but can give me some hassles in RE-connecting if the network hiccups and goes or something. Usually a restart cures it, though.

i have had no issues with wrt54g and mbp. however, i would have to reboot the wrt54g a few times a month because all clients would lose connections.

haven't had any issues since i put dd-wrt and tomato on all of them.

I cannot connect to my WRT54g with my mbp, but ONLY when I am booted into XP with bootcamp. I have trouble with other access points as well sometimes. I'm not sure what the problem is.

I brought my MBP home and connected to my 5 year old WRT54G with no problems at all. Running fine for the last week. (since I got it)

I can't forward ports with Macs and Linksys routers; just never seems to work. (Apple, D-Link, etc work fine)
