So for about a month now I'd have random reboots that I couldn't entirely figure out. Now I realize it's my storage drive, an 80gig WD IDE drive. Before the restart, you can hear some clicking from the drive followed by a high pitch whine of something spinning up again... which it does about 7 times than the system freezes and restarts.

Scandisk didn't help, and it doesn't defrag fully. Would reformatting it fix it, or is it physically messed up and I should just get another drive.

Did you try running WD's DataLifeguard tools on it? If it's still under warranty, RMA it. WD also has a loyalty program going on. Link
