Hello...

I have this old Box, it is used as a media server. Now I want to upgrade it.

Specs:

Intel D845GBV
Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz (I want to Upgrade the proc to 2.8GHz and if possible HT enabled)
RAM 1GB 266MHz
Nvidia 7300GT

Now, if I upgrade the proc P4 2.8GHz would I able to play 1080p on it? If not then I'll start building a proper HTPC.

Thanks

??

Intel's list of supported processors only includes Pentium IVs and celerons. So I would say no to HT. It does take a 2.8 Pentium IV though. You need bios PO6. As for 1080p I think that depend more one your video card, I doubt the 7300 could handle it. I don't really know that much about the requirements for home theater, just a gamer.

sounds ancient, I'd just build a new system for cheap. I dont think I would waste money upgrading from one P4 to the other.

if u kept case and peripherals, you could probably build a new system for around 200-300 dollars, or MB less.

Just get a cheap Mobo, perhaps an E6300(wolfdale) and some cheap DDR2 ram. Might want to get a decent card too, like a cheap HD 4K series.

that board supports 533 bus. you could probably get a 3.06 ghz 533 bus HT p4 to work on it. A 3.2 ghz celeron would probably work too ... its also 533 bus. sometimes the board specs are not updated, but just upgrade to the latest bios first.

The newer core 2 duo processors have better instruction sets for video handling. I would find it dubious to upgrade 5 year old hardware. I think even some integrated chipsets can handle HD Video and Audio. Intel sells some motherboards with some nice integrated chipsets. There may be some definite advantages to building new if you can afford it. That technology (P4), is quite dated at this point. The faster P4's are know to run hotter, and should be avoided.

This is only my opinion.

I am using my older 1.2 Gig Celeron to type this. It is still working. It has outlived 2 AMD XP systems. I use this system as backup with XP while my wife is using my other system with the E7200 CPU and Intel DG35EC Motherboard.
