Can IDE cables be hooked up backwards?

I have a pc in desktop case I'm going to be working on. A normal IDE won't be able to reach, but if I plug the master connecter to the motherboard and the other 2 connecters to drives will I have a problem.

I never tried this before

on a 40 wire ide cable you can switch and use the red marked side as pin 40 if you need to. just make sure you do it on every connection it makes. some cables have the plastic molded so you can only fit it one way though, you might have to cut off that little plastic bump
