Can IBM 75 GXP Deskstars Handle a 37.5+ PCI Bus?

My Maxtor 7200 ATA100 20GB locks up at any PCI bus over 35MHZ. Consequently, I'm looking for alternatives. Anybody out there pushing the PCI bus with a Deskstar?

My 45 Gig 7200Rpm Ibm drive is running sweet at 40mhz, I also have two older 5400Rpm Ibm 8.2 gigs running on the same system.

That was the answer I was looking for. I'm probably going to pickup a Deskstar from Buy.com and hopefully I will be able to get my 600E back up to 900 (which is where it was with my WD before I "upgraded" to the Maxtor). Thanks for the feedback.

My 30GB 75 GXP does 37.5 fine. I'm also running it off a Promise Ultra 100 PCI Controller, just to double my odds of something going wrong :).

Heheh. I'm running a Promise Ultra 66 and 34GXP 20 Gig. Both are older models, and run great to at least 41.5 MHz, and I ran 38.3 for months, although my Quantum crash has made me nervous so I've dropped the speed now.

My next drive is an IBM 75 GXP 30-40 Gig drive to replace my ailing Quantum. (As I've mentioned in previous threads, the Maxtor I bought last month kicked the bucket the same evening I installed it, at 38.3.)

Eug: The IBM is a REALLY nice drive. You won't be disappointed. My old 10.2GB/7200 RPM/ATA33 Maxtor did fine by me, but with the ATA100 controller the IBM simply rocks. It's also quiet as a mouse compared to the Maxtor.

I was SO tempted to go RAID, but then I decided to buy beer instead :).

My record with both a 22GXP and a 75GXP is 44MHz! Both 100% stable for a month...until I found it out and changed the divider.....

Wow...thanks for all the feedback. Looks like I bought the wrong drive last month. I can't believe this Maxtor locks up at 37.5Mhx and Deskstars will run stable at 44Mhz. Looks like I'm in the market for a Deskstar.

In general, IBMs seem to have the best rep as overclockable HDDs. Old MAxtors were notoriously bad. Maxtor seems to have done okay with their first 7200RPM/ATA33 drives, but now it looks like they're crapping out again with the ATA100s.

Got both of mine up to 40 mhz on my KA7-100 hpt370 controller. Put them in RAID, and problems past 33 mhz, don't know if its the harddrives or other compenents.

I had a maxtor drive... that thing wouldn't go past 35MHZ. They are fast drives but they are crap... stay away I tell you! I got rid of mine.

Don't forget Western Digital. Up until recently, their "expert" line of drives were just rebadged IBM 7200 RPM Deskstars (I know this was true up through the 27.3GB WD Expert, and I believe one model after that). In my experience, those drives, like their deskstar cousins, will handle 37.5MHz, and even 41.5MHz (although I don't recommend it) just fine.

The reason I mention this, is that there are still a LOT of these drives out there. For example, Sams recently clearanced out the 20.5GB models for $60 after rebate.

Good luck,

Hmm... my old IBM deskstar V (5400rpm) wouldn't take overclocking the bus AT ALL. My new 30gb 7200rpm Maxtor Diamondmax plus is rock stable at 37.5mhz. I wouldn't try higher though! Too many people say they won't do 40+ The new IBM deskstars aparently are the way to go. Supposidly cooler than Maxtor too! :)

Ecliptic, a reminder, overclock at your own peril. The drive is not crap if it doesn't operate at unsupported bus speeds.
