Can I wear a button-up shirt and khakis to a business attire event?

I don't want to go buy a suit, shirt, shoes, and tie to wear once. I find them way too hot and uncomfortable.

depends what the event is and what you're going there for.

If it's an awards night, you'll need a suit and tie. It's a formal event. You'll look like an ass if you show up in khakis.

A good suit makes the man. If you don't have one, for the love of god you need to invest in one. Even if you only wear it once in a blue moon. Go to a proper place and get something decent.

Some awards reception/dinner for work. I don't really want to go, but the rest of the team is.

no issue as long as you don't mind looking like a jackass if everyone else is in biz formal and you're in biz casual.

i clearly have more IDGAF then my brethren above.

I haven't worn a suit in almost eight years. Short sleeve golf shirts and casual pants every day.

Can I even find a suit, and have it ready by midweek? Don't they need to tailor it?

you buy off the rack like the rest of us poor suckers. tailoring is optional, unless you need the pants hemmed.

So where is a good place? Macy's suits looked to be about half of what Men's Warehouse shows. The Target pieces above would be nice, but might look too cheap to others.

Also, what about materials? Are some cooler / lighter than others?

got a nordstrom rack near you? macy's is fine enough IMHO, entry level suits for $350 or so when on sale

In my opinion, grey of some sort preferably charcoal. I would advise against black unless you want to look like everyone else.

No Nordstrom Rack nearby. There is a large outlet mall relatively close though.

Entry level is $350? I was hoping for closer to $200.

might as well try to find a place and rent or buy used. I can't fathom good results for $200, but I really like suits so YMMV.

My wife is mad too. She doesn't want to spend several hundred dollars to go to dinner.

Would it really be hard to ask what they mean by business attire?

Where I work that's clothing... if customers are present.

If anything more is wanted it gets clearly defined as to what exactly counts for what they are looking for. A suit an tie are not something to worn, ever, where I work. Even a suit and no tie would likely fall as such.

Business is suit and tie.

Business Casual is khakis and button down.

Rent a Tux, be the boss.

1. Ask your coworkers
2. Buy a decent/cheap suit which you can use for many years
3. Stop being a weirdo who does'nt know how to dress or socialize.

No, no you can't.

Business is not the same as business casual.

If you insist on going with the button down and khakis bring a decent blazer.

Who says you have to buy a suit to be in business attire? You own khakis. You own a button-down shirt. I assume you own nice shoes. Button the collar, add decent tie and sportcoat. Now you're in business attire. Unless you work for some 100 year-old bank that should be fine.
