Yes you can use an E8400 for sure I've seen someone at Xtremesystems doing so but it may require a bios update to work properly.

most definitely with that board. And it should easily hit over 450fsb on the quad if your cpu can handle it.

Ummm i just hope your not a newbie overclocker. That board would be like giving a teenager who just got his licence on an automatic a key to a 911 porsche stick.

I heard theres about 40 different options in overclocking to tweek the settings on that board, and you'll have very little support for it, so you best know what your doing.

Meaning... i wouldnt follow what people tell you to do with this board unless its from another person who has the board.

Its either a monster overclocker, or a serious Pain in the Head.

I have one but its not out of the box yet... im debating on that or a 780i at this moment. My Stepup was approved, so i need to think xfire or sli. :

If your seriously a newbie, i recomend a much friendlier platform, like an ASUS or Gigabyte. You'll see better overclocking with these two.

What is the avg cost of a stepup? I read somewhere someone's stepup was $12. Surely if I had a 8800gt I couldn't stepup to a 9800gx2 for $12 if all was within the guild lines.

because this guy is a newb. I agree... DFi boards are for experienced people, or at least people who have overclocked before.

X38 is the latest and greatest Intel Chipset, you think it doesn't support their latest and greatest processors? Did you even google it? Or look it up on DFI's site?

I might have said no too.

IMHO DFI boards are for people who pay for them.

Also you never can tell with compatibility quite what will happen and its always wise to double check with people who have the hardware. But its a bit early to say for that particular combo since C2D 45nm are only just out.

Original poster would be well advised to google and spend time reading the reviews and also forum threads on the mobo to find out what problems people are having if any.

Email DFI they should give you a definitive answer.

Also if you have success its nice to return and add your report to the thread you started so other forum users can get the benefit of your experience.

Erm dude, p35 supports 45nm chips, why the hell would x38 not support them, if x38 is newer tech then p35 ?

109 for the 780i board.

i had to pay 15 extra because i dont have most of the accessories it. :T

So i paid 124 to upgrade my POS 680i that was sitting inside a box all nicely packed up for emergency.

Not much of a cost benifit, but, at least i got rid of that POS 680i. :T

So now i have 2 boards in front of me and its bothering me on deciding which one to put inside. Im gonna give the 780i a couple more months. My build isnt going to start til then. Wait to see how many 780i's die by then. If they die.

I hate my 680i SLI. I want a P5E3 Premium when it is available.

That is still a lot better than paying full price. Probably save you around $125.

To the OP the answer is yes the X38 does support 45nm processors.

I was in your shoes couple months ago, and I can tell you that I went with X38 and Crossfire ( soon to get my second 3870) :). Nvidia chipsets seems to buggy for me.

because, dude, not all p35 are good for 45nm, what do you think the month and a half delay in release was about? the 4 layer PCB mobos created EM interference that stopped them working to spec

Intel tried to fix it and they should all work to spec but I bet that the 4 layer mobos will not clock as well as the 6 layer for a start and may be less stable.

You need to do research before you leap in and buy stuff, especially 45nm mobos, the narrower CPU traces become the trickier EMI gets. Theres no knowing with mobos developed before the final revision chips were out.
