I want to create:
a router, printing server, file sharing server, and a webhosting for my development projects.

I have been using w2k3 server and its awesome.

I have a:

athlon 2800xp(o/c from 2100) in an 7n8x2.0 mb, with 1 ig of rm, 100gig8mb hd, etc...

Can i use my win2k3 server as workstation?

you can, but its pointless since its basicly just winxp without skins and with server support

I'm currently using it also, love the thing🙂

Uhh... why not ? The only reason I'd say no is if it didn't support a game you like to play.

Otherwise, it just demands more from the hardware... and if you're already running it, you shouldn't care.

Yeah, you can... but why? For the price of it, you could get a real router... and use WinXP, which would support more games.

It actually uses less ram from my experience with it. You can also still skin it and play games with it too 🙂. You just have to enable all the right services, and graphic card acceleration, and your set

so people should i run xp as a server - i need ftp and server abilities to develop sites, with coldfusion installed. or install win2k3 and have a real server.

i don't care about games, i care about productivity, would i be able to use everything like xp but no games?

It's incredibly expensive, so I am assuming you are pirating it, thus don't care about price.

Yes, you can but why would you want to? XP does all that.

CFMX server? It shouldn't matter. You can run it all on localhost if you're just developing. Windows' "server" mode or not.

It's overkill though.

yes you can, and the number one reason to run it is it has less code bloat than XP.

Just look at the system requirements. Compare them.

Win2k3 is faster than Windows XP... at least, it definately FEELS faster. It ran quite acceptably on my celeron 600.

Not a fair assumption. There were a couple of offers and even a link to download a 180-day evaluation version of the 2k3 production code.

Sure, their [Micro$oft] desire is to get you hooked in for 180 days and then require major $$$ to officially license it, but for now, it is free to evaluate.

yes you can use it as a workstation.

IF you do, i recommend you set up a separate user for games and such. all of the services will keep running in the background no matter which user your logged in as, set up a separate user to accomodate your games and such.

An outstanding suggestion ... now that switching users is so quick, you could setup separate users for things like business workstation, graphics (photoshop) work and game.

nice one !

I'm not understanding the reasoning behind this... is it just to have icon placements on the desktop for faster access to games vs. another type of user ? You said yourself everything else is running as a service anyway...

In Win2k3, many of the services are not turned on by default. Therefore, you could leave the administrator/default account in this pristine state. Immediately setup a series of separate accounts that were optimized for:
a) office applications
b) video editing
c) local gaming (no network needed)
d) online gaming

Granted, this might be a whole lot of trouble to go through, so most people wouldn't fool with it. However, if you have a game that you want to play that does not need network access, you could have an account that does not have network access and no video editing drivers loaded.

I switched back to winxp.
I'm building another system soon, thay one will have win2k3server.

I want to know something: how do i configure 2 nics cards to works as a router for my home network.

This should get you started.

i get win2k3 for free as a student (well i have 1 week to get it).

i'd build 2 computers. my server cost me under $150. and my workstation runs winxp. not worth the aggravation of messing with all of it on one machine. buy a kvm, and another machine.

my 2nd machine was cheap

xp1500+ and fan $33 used
256mb pc133 $20 on ebay
motherboard with onboard everything $20 on ebay
10gb hard drive i had laying around probably cost you like $20
case of some sort

much easier especially if you wanna mess with it.
