I have a couple of 200W power supplies laying around. Can I use one for the motherboard and the other for the drives? Really the second one would just run the CD drive and hard drive. Would this make sense or even be worth doing? How much power does the HD take use up?
wouldnt your case be a little crammed from the 2 psu's? theortically yes it could work depends on what type of HD you have.
Go to the manufacturer's website and see the specs for the drive you have or intend to have
Ditto with what's said above, but you'd need a decent sized case to do it. Server boxes are equipped with dual PSUs for a reason. Desktop boxes aren't. It would probably easier just to pick up a 350-400 watt PSU if you're concerned about power.
How would you go about powering up the second PSU? Or powering it down properly for that matter? Isn't it the ATX plug that plugs into the mobo for doing that? I don't see how it can be done effectively without a supporting mobo.
