can I use this video card with my system?

If anyone can help - I'd appreciate it. I have a Gateway dx4710-07 and I want to add an EVGA GT 240 graphics card to it.

It says the power supply needs to be at least 300W with a minimum of 18 amps on the +12V rail.

My PS says it has +12V1 = 8.0A and +12V2 = 14.0A. I've read a ton of postings on power supply rail amperages and there are so many conflicting opinions I can't figure it out. I'd prefer to not change out my PS as I don't do any gaming or anything like that.

Should I return the card and get something else? I like the video outputs the card has so I'd like to use it if it won't tax the system too much. I got the card for $65 with the rebate so it doesn't seem too expensive compared to others and for my limited needs.

Any help would be great - thanks.

The GT240 has probably the lowest power draw in its class with less than 4a draw in 3d. I can't imagine it having any problems.

8A + 12A = 20A > 18A

Thanks for your reply. Some posts suggest that you can't just add the 12V1 and 12V2 - very confusing explanations dealing with how the two rails are configured.

The power supply says that it is over current protected - what is the worst that could happen if I plug it in and try it?

What processor do you have?

The PSU has two rails. Most likely V1 to the ATX motherboard header and V2 to the 4pin CPU header and the other components, HD dvd fans etc.

Its not going to fry your system. The GT240 uses less than an AMP idle. At the very worst you could get some instability in games. Very doubtful. Do it.
