It takes 200 pin pc2100 but I can get some pc2700. Is the 2700 ok in the system that only calls for 2100, can it be mixed? Also the laptop has a Hitachi 40gb that is super slow from day one it has been like that. Can someone recommend a brand or a specific drive that would be an improvement. Thank you

PC2700 should work fine, it's just "slight" overkill. Usually the larger hdd's are faster due to the density of the data. Dell's tend to use the slowest hdd's and advertise the hdd's size instead of speed. IE 5400rpm hdd vs 7200rpm. Seagate probably makes the best hdd's, but I'd go Maxtor if you're tight on money. Hitachi bought into IBM for hdd's, I'd stay clear of them both.
