Can I use the OS and software my laptop came with for a new system?

microsoft office basic edition 2003. that has word in it right?

oh, and I guess an XP cd didn't come with it, although I thought one had. couldn't find it.

Office Basic 2003 does have Word. That may work. The OS probably will not unless the new system is pretty much the same. OEM installed OS' are pretty much tied to the equipment they comewith.

But, there's no harm in cloning your 1.5-in drive to whatever new drive fits the new system. The worst thing that can happen is a BSOD on boot attempt.

Unless you are getting rid of the old laptop, you would be violating the terms of the EULA.

will it violate the EULA (I don't even know what that is) to use the Office Basic (if it works the first time)?

EULA = EULA

Basically you are allowed to install and use software one one machine unless otherwise stated. If you remove the software from the old machine and install it on the new machine you should be OK. OEM OS's are sometimes keyed to specific hardware and won't work on a different set. But, the same principle applies. Try it and see.
