after im done sanding, can i apply the polish compound with the rubber attachment, and then whipe it off with the cloth. Or do i need to find a sponge like attachment?

Lapping needs to be done on a true flat surface. Most use a good thick piece of scrap float glass. you put sheets of sandpaper on it face up and work your way down thru several grades to the finest depending on how bad it was to start with.. the glass and sandpaper are supposed to stay stationary and you rub the surface of the HS against it. You can't get a truly flat surface with a Dremel.
. Remember, you aren't JUST putting a shine on it - in fact getting it too shiny can work against heat transfer as the surface area available for heat conduction actually becomes gradually less the shinier it gets... Take a look sometime at a fractal representation of what would seem like a flat, smooth surface to the naked eye.
