Can I use TextEdit as a true text editor?

I always thought of this program as a word processor, but can I also use it to edit code as in a true text editor?

(if so, any options I have to select from preferences, or do I have to save it as a specific type of file)?

Command + Shift + T - Make plain text.

If nothing else... go old school, emacs or similar.
