CAN I USE T-BIRD 266 ON KT-7 MOTHERBIRD?

I have an original KT-7 motherboard on which I have been running a 850 Mhz 200 FSB T-bird.

Without investing alot of money, I wanted to put a faster chip on the board, but notice the supply of 200 FSB chips is rather dry.

I know the BIOS updates on the original KT-7 board do not support the 266 FSB chips, but I thought I had read earlier in the year some talk that they could be installed without full performance gains as a possible upgrade.

Anyone know about this??? I can't find the old posts.

Thanks....

that is true. You can install a 266 chip in a 200 board ( 133 vs. 100 ) but you will loose 33% of the speed. For instance, you can install a 266 AXIA 1.0 ghz chip, but it will only run at 750mhz.

a better idea would be to use a duron with a higher speed, as they are all 100 bus. Assuming your board will work with morgan cores.

If the CPU is unlocked, simply change the multiplier to run at 100FSB(i.e. you would change a 1GHz 266 Athlon C from 7.5 X 133 to 10 X 100).

Yeah, I posted about doing it with a 1.4ghz T-Bird and a KT-7 because many were parroting the statement in the bios release that indicated the 266 CPUs were for use with the KT7-A only. I was able to run it@112x12.5=1400mhz stable however despite picking those settings the bios read it as 110fsb and Sandra read it as 108fsb so I did a search and discovered that the KT7 series did have a tendency to misread the fsb and Sandra was less acurate then than now as well. BTW you should do a search in the FS/FT forum every week as 200fsb T-Birds do show up for sale at very low prices occasionally, or go with a Morgan as suggested since flashing to the latest bios should add support for it (not certain of this as I haven't checked) and the Morgan does have SSE, improved power management and thus less heat, and hardware data prefetch that should make it the best performer for a KT133 board.

Is there any significant performance difference from a Morgan chip and the Athlon T-bird? Would I be better in this scenario going with one over the other?

The T-Bird has a bigger cache but the Morgan has the enhanced feature set I mentioned before so it would depend on the software in use as to which would perform better, for instance SSE optimized apps should favor the Morgan. Personally I would go with the Morgan if you are able to get a definitive yes as the answer to the ability to use it with your board.
