So to my question. 2 years ago I built my gaming system with an Intel E8500 CPU but used an aftermarket cooler since I OC. I'm building this sytem for my dad stock and so didn't want to shell out money for a cooler I didn't need. I was looking at pictures of the i5's stock heatsink/fan and have a feeling it is smaller than the one that came with my E8500.

Since these are different sockets are they not compatible? What I'd obviously like to do is use the larger E8500 heatsink/fan on the i5 CPU which should not only help keep temps lower but also keep the noise down.

Thanks in advance for any help!

No, you cannot use the stock LGA775 heat sink on LGA1156. Many after-market companies do have adapters for their heat sinks, though.

Thanks for the quick reply. I assumed as much but hoped I'd get lucky. Maybe the pictures just make the i5 look so much smaller than the E8500 HS/fan combo?

Why not use the stock Intel HSF that comes with your i5-750?

I've been running my stock i3-530 WFO for several hours, my application is single threaded, but I have three running. Two physical cores and one logical core, the last core is writing this. The CPU is at 115F and the case at 118F, those numbers are ~50F above ambient. In any case, at 115F, you couldn't burn your finger.

They might have 775LGA holes on the board, take a close look first before you buy.

EDIT: But I would absolutely not use the stock HS from a 775 chip on a 1156 i7

Even if you could use the e8500 stock fan, you wouldnt want to. Its the half-height type thats designed for dual core wolfdales at stock speeds. A quad would overheat pretty quick with that heat sink.

The i5 cooler should have a copper slug in the middle and be a bit taller, so it should be better

If the one your e8500 has is the fuller height 775 cooler with copper core it's probably from the 65nm conroes or a quad core
