Can I use socket 462 HSF on socket 939?

I just placed an order for Amd64 3000. I have an old Thermalright SLK-947U Socket A cooler. Do they sell a 462-to-939 conversion kit or something of that nature? Thanks.

There are a load of options beyond stock, and not necessarily expensive options -- unless you are really into overclocking P4's, you don't need to spend a lot on a heat sink. A cpu from AMD for the socket 939 isn't very hot running normally, and there are always some heavily discounted HSF models that are being discontinued that you can locate using Pricewatch. Cooler Master, for instance, is selling off their XDream II coolers, which were advertised as being very quiet.

I put one of those on an AMD XP-M 2400 that is slightly overclocked to XP 3000 levels, and it doesn't generate near as much heat as a stock XP 3000. The XDream II handles it fine and is very quiet, as promised.

P.S. Added in edit: as long as we're dispensing with mounting bracket adapters for 939's, I have a question of my own. A nephew (out of town -- I haven't seen his new item) has acquired a used P4 1.5 GHz Socket 423 PC that apparently has no HSF, or it's got a bad fan. He's not very articulate in his eMails -- although I managed to break him of writing and spelling as if it was via IM.

I never had any of the P4's until I got a Williamette for a cheapie project here, and seldom worked on any that a relative brought over (I'm the sometimes-convenient PC geek in the family that they want to bring their truly hopeless mangles to for magical cures). If I dig into my junk boxes, will a Socket 7 or Socket 370 HSF, either one, fit a 423?

nuts... Im in the same boat.

Ive got a lovely slk-947u Id hate to donate to my dad along with my AXPm 2400 and Chaintech 7NJS motherboard when my A64 arrives tomorrow...

Found some user in some forum short-media.com claiming hes running a 947-u on an Athlon 64...might should try to contact him.

But otherwise damn, looks like stock for me, and a waste of my $45....

The bolt on ones might have a chance of working. I've heard some do. Check their website I'd say, they usually have a compatibility chart.

The stock AMD HSF is pretty good on the A64s though.

I have tried my Skt A Volcano 7+ on the 939 (with a little bit of modding) and it worked. i used the clamp that came with the stock HS and bent it a bit to fit. Also tried the Thermalright SP-90 (Skt A) - bottom line I did not like it for long term so in the end I dumped the setup - if you are more into modding give it a go.

I picked up a Thermaltake Silent 939 K8 for $30 @ CompUSA and it works quite well. I also like the fact that it's super quiet. My CPU idles @ 28C/82F so I'm happy. That's almost 30 degrees cooler than my AthlonXP.
