Can I use RAID with two different drives?

- They are both 40 gig 7200 RPM drives but different brands. And they are normal ATA drives. Can I still do raid with these, do I just need to go buy a controller card?

Thanks.

You can do this, but it is really recommended that you use the same make and model drives to achieve peak performance and reliability. Give us some information about your system, mainly the motherboard make and model.

Brand is irrelevant as long as the drives are the same size and spec for mirroring. You can even use different sizes but you will be limited by the smaller drive. For striping, I don't think a size difference even matters, but I'm not positive.

Hey xerosleep, I've got WD and Maxtor 120 GB drives and I'm wondering the same thing. Anyway, I've got a few questions for you:

  • How did your setup go with 2 different brands? Any snags?
  • What level RAID are you running?
  • What RAID controller did you get

Thanks!

My system has:
Asus P4S533 MB
P4 2.4b CPU
768 MB pc2700
Lite-on DVD and CDRW
Ti4200

Both drives are 8mb/7200 RPM. The Maxtor is ATA133 and the Western Digital is ATA100.

I'm interested in RAID Level 1. More performance is always nice, but this machine is the source of my livelihood and redundancy is my real reason for wanting RAID.

Anybody have more insight into how important the card is? Favorite cards?

Thanks,
