Can I use OEM number on retail version of Ultimate

I have a retail CD of Vista Ultimate 64-bit which I'm planning to install (got it from my friend) obviosuly I can't use his number as this version already have been activated.

I was thinking to install it, play with it and make sure everything works and then just get an OEM version to register.

Can this be done?

You can install it without activation and run it for 30 days. That should give you time to decide what else to do.

I'm pretty sure this is the case - and the 30-day-trial doesn't ask for a key at all.

+1 for a CD-key thread that doesn't involve any lawbreaking. 😀

If his DVD is retail, then youd need a retail CDKey to activate, so youd either have to reinstall clean using the DVD that came with your CDKey, or use the 'upgrade' method on the install you already did
