I want to be able to use my laptop screen as a secondary monitor. Is there a way to do this? What about modding the cords to the screen so I can hook it to a vga cable?

too much work and money involved. Might as well buy a new monitor for your desktop.

I did some research and founda program called maxivsita, I guess it uses your monitor over the network or something like that.

If the laptop is working, then yes, you can get some software that will let you use your laptop as a second monitor for the desktop. Unless you have a fast network though (Gigabit or there abouts) you probably don't want to do that.

maxivista works decently over a 100mbps lan connection. just don't try to play video or have any sort of heavy animation running. dragging windows around is quite smooth however.
