Someone told me it is possible, i just dont see how though because both ports just seem like "outs".

If its possible it would be easier to just plug whatever desktop im fixing into that and i can get rid of this extra monitor i keep in my room for fixing computers.

Possible, but impractical. Sounds like you need a mini monitor or a video in for a laptop. A USB based video-in might be easier to find. Think higher end TV tuners or USB based ADC (analog-digital converter) for video content.

You need a video-in capable card to use the HDMI. I'm not sure if they are out on mobile video cards yet.

AFAIK there is only VGA out on most if not all standard laptops. You would need a special one or like razel said an usb device to accept video in.

Plus keep in mind, not all desktop cards will have hdmi out - pretty sure you thought of this prior.

Yea your right i know that solution sounds impractical. I just wasnt sure if you could plug it in just like a normal monitor. Any TV tuner isnt gonna give me the results im looking for.

So some video cards now have the ability to have video-in? (through HDMI) So how would that work? Would it display a high res? How long has this been around for?

you can't plug it in.
USB is slow so I don't see how a usb based video-in could work (with full resolution).
You could connect computers you are repairing to your television, that way you don't need an extra screen.

There is no such thing as a video card that has HDMI in. For anything even remotely similar to this, you'd need a TV tuner (even though no TV tuner with HDMI in exists; closest thing to it is component in), but the input lag on TV tuners is anywhere from 3-5 seconds so it's pretty terrible for anything other than watching TV.
