Can I use Icq as both an internet messanger and a lan messanger?

I would like to do the above using Icq, or if there is a better lan instant messanger as well. It will just be my family on it so no need for a whole lot of complex stuff.

No I dont think so. ICQ requires you to log on to their internet server.

is the builtin "winchat.exe" only for w2k machines? and does it work?

is chatzilla my best choice for chatting on a lan. or can winchat work with w2k and w98 machines? i couldnt find "winchat.exe" on the win98 machine. anybody got some experience?

If your talking about winpopup, then yes it will work with both w98 and w2k but you need to copy it to the 98 machine. It's not very full featured though and you can't minimize it to a tray icon and if you close it you can't receive messages.
