Can I use DSL without a phone number?

My Housemate and I want to get DSL, but we don't have a landline telephone. We use our cell phones as our main lines.

Can we still get DSL without a phone #?

Yeah, like rossman said, why not cable internet?

agreed.

Question: is the house wired for phones and everything, you just don't have an actual phone service?

For the most part, DSL is cheaper than cable - that's probably his reasoning. The average for cable here in Dallas is $50 (and that's the discount for being a cable subscriber and using their equipment and such), whereas the average is $30 for DSL. ($26.95 for SBC and $34.95 for Verizon)

Yea, we're wired. The reason why I'm trying to get DSL is because DSL will only be $27/month for 1 year. Cable is going to be $44.95/month and I don't really host/play games anymore so DSL will do =)

As long as the house is wired then it'll be fine.

They may charge you extra if you don't have landline service though.

How appropriate; I just went thru this a few weeks ago. 🙂

My apartment complex does not contract with Cox Cable...the only one in Omaha, I think. :disgust:

Anyway, I had to get QWest DSL. I DO NOT have phone service with them, but I have my DSL thru them.

You sure can do it. You will get a "phone number" but it's just an account number, really.

I pay $26/mo for 1500/128, which in reality is about 800/800. It's OK...but I'd much rather have cable. Still, it's infinitely better than dial-up!!!

*edit*
I should add that I didn't have to get an ISP thru QWest, as I own a domain and have hosting already. I just needed "the pipe" to the outside world. With an ISP (they offer MSN and only MSN) it would've been $33/mo.

Yep. That's the highest I've seen. Typically it's a little lower, but I typically see about 50-60KB/s uploads. 🙂 Too bad I'm not getting the 300KB/s downloads I was getting w/cable.

Best bet is to call your local provider. Thought it's technically possible some provider will not give you ADSL without regular phone service.

I know our local phone provider wont give you ADSL with a regular active phone line.

Yes, you can. A provider like Speakeasy DSL will include the cost of the phone line in their service. (Not to mention the fact that Speakeasy has excellent TOS policy, and far, far better service than SBC or Verizon.)
