in my computer i currently have 2x4gb gskill ripjaws ram at 1600 mhz and my friend gave me 2x2gb of strontium ram at 1333 mhz. Would i be able to put these together to get 12gb or would it not work?.

If you set the timings manually u should be fine. But u'll lose dual channel bandwidth. What chipset & cpu r u using? Some can be very finicky with different ram.

I have had 3x4gb + 3x2gb and never lost triple channel.
I believe if you use the same amount in both banks you wont loose dual channel.
When you put the 3x4gb into a i7 3770k 8gb of it should run dual channel and the odd
4gb will be in flex mode.
