Can I use ATA33 HDD on ATA100 mobo, and vice versa?

At the moment, I have socket7 board (that supports UDMA33) and a hard drive (UDMA33). And no, for some reason, I can't get it to work in dma mode 🙁
Anyways, my question is..
If I upgrade my hard disk to UDMA/ATA 100 HDD, will i be able to just plug it in the IDE socket of my mobo? If so, what cable should I use? Can I use the current dma33 IDE cable or should I buy a nwe one?
The other situation would be.. if I upgrade my motherboard (not the HDD) that supports udma100, will I be able to plug the old UDMA33 HDD into the ide socket of the new motherboard? If so, can I just use the current DMA33 cable on that?

yes you can use an ata33 hard drive in an ata100 board (but the drive will only run at ata33 speed) as for cable you can use either 40 or 80pin

and...
yes you can do vice versa, and once again it will only run at ata33 speeds and 40 or 80 pin cable

the only time you need 80pin cable is when both hard drive and ide controller are 66 or higher

But even for ata33- the 80 pin cables might help your speed/data integ a tiny bit. Worth an extra buck. For CD-Roms they are useless.

what OS?
is the hdd running in compatibility mode??
any exclaimation marks in device manager?? :frown:

Actually, there is a dual proc server board from Tyan that no longer supports ATA33... 😛
Some weird "server something" chipset, so you probably won't run into it...

<< U can use ATA33 HD on ATA100 mobo but u must use 40-pin EIDE cable >>

no it is backward compatible meaning you CAN use a 40 pin but 80 wire cable.
