Can I use an unmanaged network switch to do this?

I only have one ethernet cable available in an area, but I want to attach more than one device/computer in that area.

Can I "split" that one ethernet cable using an unmanaged switch?

Summary:

Internet > modem > router > switch > devices

It is fine. You can go ahead with Switch to connect multiple devices in this network. You don't need to do any special configuration on Switch, just plug and play.

If your modem has routing feature enabled, you may need to follow cascade principle to connect router to modem. You can follow the guides below.

Most routers typically have more than one port on them as well. Are all of yours used already?
