Can I use a wireless router to pickup a wireless signal?

Hi I am sharing internet with my neighbour and the signal is a little weak. Both of us have Negear WGR 614 b/g wireless routers. Is there a way that I can configure my wireless router to to pick up his wireless router signal so it can act as an inbetween device to extend the range of his signal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that even if your neighbor agrees to it, what you're doing is illegal. But since I don't know for sure, the best thing to do is put bigger antennas (higher gains) on one or both sides, or to run a LAN cable between the houses to your own wireless router.

Just wondering why is it illegal to share internet access. Me and my neighbor are both sharing internet access to save some money.

I don't think it is illegal...

Maybe you need a stronger wireless NIC. I had a friend that just got a Linksys to replace an old netgear and he's got a pretty good connection off his neighbors wireless. *Ahem* Of course, with permission. 😉

Many ISPs consider it as a violation of the TOS.

Tell your friend to check his ISP's TOS.

*TOS = Term of Service.

I wouldn't mind getting my own internet, but when AT&T can't get my address right on 4 consecutive orders and each time on the day of delivery my internet won't work and when I call them they always tell me how something was wrong in the order ... the address was wrong or there was a system error and some other bs so they will have to re-input the order in the computer and I'll have to wait another week to get service...I got fed up with them. My building doesn't allow me to get internet from anyone else so I'd rather share with a neighbor than throw more money at Att. Its a peice of $@!t company.

My parents are in a similar situation. They recently purchased a duplex across the street from their house. My brother has since moved in and took the internet service and wireless router with him. My parents would still like to use the service, but right now they can only attach to the network if they sit with the laptop by the front door.

The only equipment currently in use is my brother's US Robotics MaxG router. Could my parents extend the range with another router positioned near their front door? What router would do that and how would it need to be configured?

Thanks.

But not breaking any laws. The provider may cancel the account but no one is going to jail. In any event, I believe even getting the account canceled is extremely unlikely unless you do something completely retarded like contact their support line to troubleshoot your connection issues to HIS service.
