Can I use a Time Machine backup to transfer data?

So my beloved Macbook Pro is probably gonna need to be replaced soon. It's a very 1st gen, 1.83 GHZ Core Duo model. I've spent years getting things set up exactly the way I want them, with my Itunes playlist, Iphoto stuff (especially the 2009 version spending a few hours teaching it to find everyone's face) blah blah blah.

I'd like to sell it before it starts acting wonky or anything, so I need some way to save all my settings, programs, favorites, and all that jazz. Could I just do a Time Machine backup and somehow migrate that over to the new Mac I end up getting? Or is there an alternate method?

Worst case scenario I'll just buy the new Mac first and connect the two via USB or Firewire or whatever to do a system migration, but if possible I'd like to be able to do it without still owning both laptops.

Any suggestions?

Yep, there is an easier way. Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder allows you to transfer all your files and settings from one Mac to another.

Yup, that's what Time Machine does - it's the same as System Migration. After you install the new OS, and it asks you if you want to do system migration (which you can also launch from the Utilities folder post-install, I believe), it should do it just fine. Don't nuke the original drive before you test and make sure all of your stuff came over though! 😉

It will, but Time Machine has been getting a reputation for being less than perfect. I would make sure you have a plan B in place just in case.
