Yes - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1131749

You could buy this - http://www.performance-pcs.com/cata...e=product_info&cPath=22_101&products_id=28797

or use a paperclip and bend it so it touches the green and any black ground wire on the 24pin connector coming off the power supply.

I have a 9800GX2. I actually installed it a couple of days ago... didn't work. I guess I need to oven bake it...?

Yeah I already Know to how to do the paperclip (I tested the paperclip thing an the psu turned on) but I want to know if it is possible to power my gpu with it cuz I dont want to ruin the card.

If you know anyone whos selling one of those cards pm please. thanks

I highly recommend against an older dual GPU card, the only thing they're good for is if your flat doesn't have adequate heating and the noise from the street is already unbearable. I bought a 4870X2 and in one year swapped it to 560 Ti just because I got fed up with the low noise and inconsistent performance, not because 560 Ti was much faster on average

I don't see why it would ruin or hurt your card? The key thing is to turn the power supply on with having it connected to your motherboard. You should be able to draw any amount of power from it when it's connected in this configuration. You would need to make sure the external PSU was turned on before your main system, or else your main system will not post without a videocard. If anyone else has any input, it's welcome.

I thought about doing this but read that voltage fluctuations between PSUs could potentially damage your computer components, so I decided against it. Remember, your GPU is getting power from the PCI-e slot too, so you can never have it powered totally independently without something more specialized.

You're better off with a bigger PSU. A good quality, efficient PSU is a good investment as it can last a long time. My Corsair HX620 is going on 5+ years now, and lately it has been constantly loaded while bitcoin mining.

I did this for a few days when my PSU crapped out on me a few years back. I had a Q6600 system, watercooling, an HD4870, a bunch of hard drives and fans powered by a 300w and a 350w PSU for a few days and had no problems.

when i was running bitcoin i used 2 psu's,one was just to run my second vid card and i had no problems.just plug in an old hard drive or cd rom to the second power supply or else your 12v will be low. you don't have to plug any cables in.

Thanks everyone. So it seems like it wont hurt from what you guys are saying. About the older dual graphics card, I'm pretty much only want the gtx 295. It's a great gpu (as good as the 570). Only thing is it has 900mb ram (still pretty good) and dx 10.

Are you crazy, why would you want a GTX 295? Are you running 1680x1050 or something?

660ti or 670 are about a million times better and more consistent if Nvidia is your desire. Dual-GPU basically sucks. GTX 295 is going to take fairly large hits in newer games, and particularly at 1080p and above.

Seems like a bad idea to me. I've done the paperclip mod. Your psu will run until you turn it off at the switch which isn't good for it either. I've heard of it killing numerous psus. I would reccomend doing something else. A GTX 295 is roughly equivalent to a GTX 470 which can be had for less money.
