Can I use a regular AC adapter with a laptop?

I lost the power brick for my sony pcg-sr27k laptop.... I looked around online for the power brick and it goes for $99 (new) or $50 with shipping on ebay (well, $30 plus like $15 shipping)... Can I just get a standard AC adapter from radioshack or is it important to get one matched for this notebook? It's DC 16V/3.75A... Thanks!

If it's rated exactly the same...i'd say it should work.

Disclaimer: I've fried a GPS doing this. I'm not liable.

As long as the adapter puts out the same voltage(and the same kind of voltage) and the same or more amperage, you can use it.

i wouldn't trust my laptop to anything other than the adapter that comes with it

also, good luck finding a 3amp + adapter at radio shack, they really don't carry much that do that

but that's just my opinion

Yeah, radio shack isn't going to have anything like that.

Believe it or not, you may have better luck than you think at your local Goodwill stores. They usually have a big bin full of wall adapters.

Haha.. No offense, but, based on your disclaimer, I'll wait for more replies before judging the probability of your "should work" claim... ;)

Actually RS does carry a replacement AC adapter for most laptops but it's friggin $$$$$ ($120 to be exact). I thinks its called "the Juice"

It supposed to be able to help you plug your laptop into any kind of power plug like in airplanes or whatnot. I work at RatShack and have do have people come in about this kinda thing every so often. They tend to either get sticker shock or go away sad and dejected because they have to contact the manufacturer.

I saw the "juice" - $120 bucks but now I'm thinking it's worth it.. I like the ability to plug it in my car, etc.. I could hook up my gps to my laptop then.. Cool beans.. Well, I'll try to find something cheaper but $120 isn't bad for something that's 3 adapters in one..

uhm. don't buy that POS.

Buy one from the manufacturer on ebay, then buy an ac converter for like $35, or $40 on ebay.
